A estrutura e a distribuição espacial da população de Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J.F. Macbr. (Fabaceae) (paujacaré), assim como a infl uência da intensidade de cobertura de dossel na abundância de sua regeneração natural, foram estudadas em 30 parcelas de 100m2 (10m x 10m) na RPPN Rio das Pedras (Mangaratiba-RJ). A distribuição dos indivíduos em classes de tamanho mostrou tendência ao "J invertido". A população apresentou padrão de distribuição espacial agregado (Id = 2,00; P < 0,05). Não houve relação signifi cativa entre a porcentagem de cobertura de dossel e o número de indivíduos da regeneração natural (R2 = 0,060; P = 0,191).

The structure and spatial distribution of a Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J.F. Macbr. (Fabaceae) population, as well as the infl uence of the canopy cover on the abundance of the natural regeneration, were studied in 30 plots of 100m2 (10m x 10m) in the Private Reserve (RPPN) Rio das Pedras, Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The distribution of the individuals classed according to size evidenced an "inverted J". The population presented an aggregated spatial distribution pattern (Id = 2,00; P<0,05). The canopy cover level was not signifi cantly related with the abundance of the natural regeneration (R2 = 0,060; P = 0,191).
