Os nematódeos constituem um dos grupos mais numerosos na natureza. Eles habitam diferentes ambientes, podendo ser parasitas de animais e plantas ou livres em solo e água. Por um longo período, os estudos relacionados ao grupo restringiam-se a formas parasitas devido à sua grande importância na medicina e na agricultura. Existiam algumas razões para esse fato, especialmente, o tamanho dos nematódeos de vida-livre, uma vez que a grande maioria das espécies marinhas é microscópica, dificultando o seu estudo. Essa visão, no entanto, vem sendo atualmente revertida e a importância do grupo nos ecossistemas marinhos, vem-se tornando cada vez maior, conforme apresentado nessa revisão.

Nematodes are one of the most abundant groups in nature. They live in different habitats, may be parasites of animals and plants or free-living in soils and water as well. For a long period of time, the studies related to this zoological group were restricted to parasite forms because of their importance for medicine and agriculture. It might be attributed to the reduced size of free-living nematodes, as the majority of marine species are microscopic making complex their study. Nevertheless, it has been changed recently through the growth of the importance of this group in marine ecosystems according this current review
